Artist Leena Similu of Yaya Situation is based in Silverlake. Much of her work is inspired by her Grandmother who was a midwife in Cameroon and whom she frequently visited during school summers. Her work is personal and observational exploring matriarchy, power of femininity, fertility. The starting point was relearning the Cameroonian Masks that she would see at family gatherings and celebrations.
